Earth Materials 04.02.23- 10.06.23

Earth Materials is a unique collection of handcrafted pieces in wood, stone, slate, metal, paper, chalk, clay, ice and plant fibre. Curated by Ann Symes, Gallery57 represents a group of artists and makers with an interest in process, material and craftsmanship. https://www.gallery57.co.uk/earth-materials

Three of the artists exhibiting at Gallery57 grow plant material to produce fibres that they craft into artefacts:

Zena Holloway is concerned with ocean conservation and through her work she reminds us of the beauty and vulnerability of coral. Beeswax moulds of differing designs are planted with wheatgrass seed which, after two weeks, develop an intricately woven root structure which forms a sustainable material and the basis for her sculptural forms.

Susie Gillespie embraces the whole experience of what goes into making even a small piece of cloth. She spins yarn on a distaff from the flax and nettles she has grown and harvested to weave and sew with. Influenced by prehistoric and early textiles, Susie’s woven structures reflect these qualities.

Alice Fox sources her materials from her allotment, a space where she can experiment and explore the potential of what grows there, planted and wild. As well as harvesting and processing fibres for weaving, Alice gathers plant material from which to make inks, dyes and stains. Her book, ‘Plot 105’, which describes her processes in depth, is available in the gallery.
