Bio-designer, researcher,

collaborator & the founder of Rootfull.

Zena Holloway grows wheatgrass seed in templates that she intricately carves from beeswax. Over 12 days the shoots grow to 20cm while the roots bind below to form a naturally woven structure. The entire process incorporates organic and locally sourced materials and any excess shoot or seed is repurposed as animal fodder, leaving no waste behind.

Through contemporary craft, innovation and invention, Holloway grows root into memorable artefacts that cultivate material intelligence and regenerative design.

Evolving the landscape of

contemporary craft

In the thriving world of contemporary craft, Bio-design is reshaping our understanding of art, seamlessly merging sustainability with creativity.

Zena Holloway crafts a narrative that intertwines the elegance of nature with the ingenuity of human design. She draws on her extensive experiences as an underwater photographer, to grow designs that are deeply influenced by the beauty and mystique of the ocean.

Roots are the unseen building blocks of our natural world, providing the essential foundation for life to thrive. Similarly, corals act as the roots of the ocean, offering support for a staggering 25% of all marine species. The root sculptures not only serve as tangible creations but also as powerful metaphors for the exquisite, yet fragile, nature of our oceans.
