Root Lace Dress
Phoebe English x Rootfull
Rootfull partnered with British designer, Phoebe English to grow a stitch-free dress where bouncy root-grown lace meets a cleverly framed cotton strip bodice.
The dress was created without stitching, relying solely on a series of knots and ties for construction. The root grows on templates carved from beeswax, binding with the cloth as it grows. The material growing process, crafted from dead-stock cotton fabric, water, and grass seed, takes twelve days to come to life.
Phoebe English is an award-winning slow fashion brand, embracing a circular design approach to craft high-quality, sustainable clothing, always mindful of the planet’s limited resources. Each collection is created as a response to global warming, the collapse of Earth’s systems, and the loss of biodiversity—issues that the global fashion and textile industry has significantly contributed to.
The slow fashion movement prioritises sourcing sustainable materials in an attempt to reduce carbon emissions, distance and fibre miles, as well as careful and limited production runs, promoting conscious consumerism.
